Homeschool Memoirs Assignment #2

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w108/hsbawards/Homeschool%20Memoirs/agenda.png

This week’s theme is about sharing your 2008-09 homeschool agendas and plans. You’ve been preparing your plans for sometime and you’re ready to go. Or you’re still in the planning-stage and need some inspiration or tips on what to use. Because many use different curriculum and methods there is always something new to be gleaned from other homeschoolers. It’s always fun and interesting to see what other’s are using and the WWWWH as Robin Sampson suggests. So this week I hope you will share what you’re doing this year for your homeschool agenda. Share the different curriculum you’re using. You can also include what age/grade you’re using it for, how long you’ve been using it, and why you like it.

Please share a Bible verse that has encouraged you or inspired you during this planning-process, and how.

Our agenda is pretty simple. I have what we are using listed and linked in my side bar.  I will share a little about each subject.

Reading ~ Pathway Readers - even though we are in 3rd grade this year, we are still on the 2nd grade level reader books.  We spent all of K working on phonics and it took it forever to click.  When we finished that phonics program, I was unsure about where to go next.  After much searching, I chose Pathway Readers.  There were several reasons I started them at the K level in 1st grade, and I am glad that I chose to do that.  We are almost to the point where we are caught up.  When we finish the 2nd grade readers and workbooks, we wil still have some time left this year.  We will go straight to the 3rd grade readers, skip the workbook part of it and be ready to start on the 4th grade level when we start 4th grade.

Handwriting ~A Reason for - I have mixed emotions about having them do a handwriting program, but both of them have horrid handwriting, so I have told them, as soon as it is neat, we will drop the program.  Apparently neither one of them care.  And now, this year we will be tranisitioning into cursive. Once they learn that cursive style, I will re-evaluate the need for a program.

Spelling ~ A Reason for - we love this program! They are on level B this year.  If all goes well with it, we will skip over C and go straight to the 4th grade level with this.

Grammar ~ First Language Lessons Level III - I debated on what to do with this area as well.  I looked at everything I could get my hands on and nothing was clicking.  I accidentaly came across the level 3 for this and knew immeidiately it was what I wanted to do.  We used FLL on and off during 1st and 2nd grade, and I loved what they learned from it - it really stuck with them, so I knew this was the way to go.  So far, so good with it!  I am loving it and so are they.

Math ~ Math U See- With Riley, he has struggled with this a time or two, but it is the one for us!  I usually remind him to get the blocks out, then he gets back on track.  He is one that you can watch him 'see' how it connects!

History ~ Story of The World Volume III- we LOVE history!  I know that they are still young and that I am just intorducing this all to them right now, but they do love it and ask for it almost daily.  And you wouldn't believe what all I have learned!!

Science ~ A Reason For  -once again, searched with nothing sparking my interest.  Last year we used Considering God's Creation, and they loved it, but it was more of a one year thing, at least at this level.  We may hit on it again in a few years.  In the end for this year, I chose A Reason For. They love the hands on and the experiments.  So far, so good here also!

Five In A Row ~ I know this is supposed to be a complete curriculum in itself, but I cannot use it in that way - just a personal preference.  I love FIAR and I love what it teaches them!  We use it every week, and they learn so much from it.

I think that is all we are doing. Sound like a lot when it is on paper, but it is not that much!  For now, we alternate History and Science, but I am think about streching those into 4 days each - since there is not much for each day.  We focus heavy on one every other day.  I think next week we will try spreading it out.

A verse that has encouraged me ~

In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps. -Proverbs 16:9
