SchoolHouse Review: Apologia- Land Animals of the 6th Day

Photobucket
Apologia has got to be one of my favorite science curriculum that is available.  I fully understand and agree with their stance on immersion and spending the full year focusing on and studying, in depth, one subject.  We have almost made our way through all of the books that Apologia has to offer that are actually elementary level.  We have continued on with these for several reasons... one being I like the full year study.  We worked on Anatomy this past year, but got side-tracked several times, and my plans were to finish it up this year... until Apologia became one of the first vendors available to us with the Crew!! AND... they were offering the one book that we have not done (or started on)!

Kiddos were both super excited when I told them of the possibility that we would be able to use Zoology 3 - Land Animals of the Sixth Day for science this year.  They were even more excited when it came in and wanted to start right away!  They were able to start reading on it immediately, but had to wait to dig into the note-booking (we only got one of the notebooks that goes with this text- and that was fine with us) until I was able to pick another one up!

Like I said, we have used Apologia since the beginning, (well, OK, their 2nd grade year) and it has always been one of my favorites.  The text are large and have beautiful photos in them.  The notebooks that go along with them are very thorough, covering all that is mentioned in each chapter. In the notebook journal, it gives a suggested use of the program.  We tend to follow their program suggestions and work on Science 2 days a week.  Usually 2 weeks covers a full lesson or chapter.  There is a lot of reading in each chapter, and that is done aloud by me while they work on one set of their workbook pages - "Things I Remember".  (Similar to the page above, with space for them to write things from the chapter and spots to draw from the chapter).  The other pages are done on their own, a crossword puzzle and some questions about the chapter.  The experiments/projects are always fun to do.  Even though they like the projects, I think my kiddos favorite part are the mini-books that go with each chapter.  Oh, and Samantha loves art & drawing, so she spends way more time on her notebook than Riley does.

Apologia is available online at Apologia Educational Ministries, or sometime at your local supply store. I know it is available for us locally at Mardel.  The text is available for $39.00 and the notebook for $24.00.  Since this product is designed for grades K-6th, there is the regular notebook (what we used) and there is also a Jr. Notebook available as well.
