CREW: Family Mint

Family Mint is a free program that is designed to help you teach your kiddos about money management.  As part of the Crew, we were asked to review the website.

Here at my house, we do not give the kiddos allowance.  We feel they are part of the family, we shouldn't have to pay them to learn to clean up after themselves. When they are older and become a husband or a mom or even just live alone as an adult, no one will be paying them to do their dishes or laundry.  It is just a part of life.

That being said, I do feel that the Family Mint program would be a great asset to any family that use money, or even any other token, as an allowance for their children.  I liked the design of the website, it seems very user-friendly.  It is just not something that we are currently in the need for, so this review was a hard one to write.

*Disclaimer ~ Family Mint allowed me access to the site free of charge in order for this review.  Please check out the Crew link above for more reviews and opinions of this product.

Destination Disney: What is your favorite thing to eat at Disney?

Photobucket
We try to save money and NOT eat on Disney grounds when we go, but we do have the occasional splurge and our favortie place to eat is Rainforest Cafe that is actually at Downtown Disney.  We love to eat there and whenever we visit a city that has a Rainforest close, we make a trip to it!

On the topic of food... when we went in October of 2008 with my inlaws and my nephew, we had lunch in Mexico.  We all ordered and when the waitress brought out Roger's meal (don't remember what it was he ordered - just a mexican meal) Chunky looks over and says...ewww.. that looks like frowed up (throw-up).  We laughed so hard at that...and Roger quietly ate his lunch!

And here is a food related picture...

CREW: Galaxy of Education

I'm not gonna lie...we have reviewed A LOT of math this year.  While at first, it felt like *another math* but as we are starting to wrap this year up, I do see a few positive things about all the math!  We have seen a large selection of what is out there and we have been able to see what works and what doesn't (for each individual child) and me, having two kiddos, was able to find things that worked for each of them!

I am happy to say that I also found something that will work for BOTH of them...and by will work, I mean they both enjoy!!

Math Galaxy sent us an array of their games!  I downloaded the ones that were sent, then I got to exploring them more and realized that some of them were higher math than we are, so those will have to wait.  However, we did find a couple that were at our level and we have been enjoying them!  We LOVE Word Problems!  The kiddos also have been using Whole Numbers.  There are a couple of ebooks that are riddlers that have been really fun!

The website doesn't have them each on an individual page, so you just have to scroll thru and see what all is there and what level would be best for your child.  Here is the page that has all of the products.  They are set up to where you earn Treasures and Robots (kinda like earning lives) and you can use them later in games.  Be warned, there are not a lot of bells and whistles on this game, it is simple and it is math, but my kiddos have enjoyed it.  I have even had my K age nephew playing on it.

*Disclaimer ~ We were given these products free of charge to use in exchange for our review.  Please visit the Crew, linked above, for more reviews and opinions.

Southern Yankee

Riley got his uniform today!  I made him run try it on since he has a game tomorrow!!  Even though his picture shows otherwise, he is REALLY excited about his first game tomorrow!

I will take pictures at his TWO games tomorrow (along with Pinewood Derby) and get them posted tomorrow night!

Cool Camo!

So, Gramma found this really cool  tye-dye kit on clearance at WalMart and she picked it up, along with 3 t-shirts for the kiddos to do sometime this week. Chunky was on Spring Break, so he came over here to play with the kiddos couple of days.

Here is our process of the tye-dye, along with the results!  Samantha wasn't here, so I did her's for her.  She was happy with the results.

First, we started with plain white shirts:
Then we picked how we wanted them to look and tyed them up:
Here they are:
Here is Samantha's since she wasn't here:
Put the dye on the shirt:
Add it carefully:
Riley's is ready to sit and soak overnight:
So is Samantha's:
And so is Chunky's:
Into the bags they go:
YUCH! Now how do I get my hands clean?
24 hours later: Time to rinse:
Samantha's swirl:

CREW: Children's Bible Hour Ministries

I have never heard of Children's Bible Hour Ministries until the Crew.  Our review product is their new line of children's books called Seasons of Faith. We received the set of four books, each with thier CD.  We were actually walking out the door when they came in, so we grabbed them and headed out the door.

These stories were so good!!  The kiddos want to listen to one of them every week when we do our errands!  They have really cute story lines, but always go back to the fact that Jesus died for us.  Love them!!

I spent some time browsing through the website and found many items that I really like...one of them being the Keys for Kids daily devotions.  We will be working these into our days...maybe at breakfast time?

*Disclaimer~ These products were sent to me free of charge in exchange for my review.  For more reviews of this and otehr products, please visit the Crew linked above.

Rileytown shakes at volcano explosion...

It was a quiet day in Rileytown, when suddenly, there was a rumble.
The volcano!  It's gonna blow! Run for your lives!

Ok, here is how this all started:

For Christmas, Riley got this Volcano Kit

It came with these pieces:

We put the mold together and filled it with the plaster mix and let it set:

I thought I had a picture of it when it came out of the mold, but I didn't and Riley got to it and painted it before I did.

Easter Egg Hunt time!!

CurrClick

See if you can find all 18 eggs...will let you know how I do!!

Woohooo!!! Loved my grocery shopping today!!!

Ok, I have checked out the Grocery Game before and even paid for it for a couple of months, but really didn't feel like I was saving enough to justify it, so I quit.  I tried to do it on my own a time or two and over time, I have gotten better about ad searching and matching up what's on sale with my coupons and saving.  Then, I found Coupon Mom.  From what I can tell, Coupon Mom is pretty much the same thing.  So, I have been watching her site, reading and just seeing what I need to do.

Coupon Mom posts the sales ads, along with any coupons (and when they were in the paper) for Target, WalMart, Walgreens and CVS on Sunday.  There is a drop-down menu to choose your state and it has Kroger listed for AR.  Kroger sales run from Wed- Tues.  My normal errand day, including grocery shopping is Wednesday.  That is also the day that the Kroger ad comes out here, so I may be cutting it close on some weeks, but we with deal with that when I run into that problem.  Anyways, you can pull up the list of what is on sale and check your items and then it will pull up your grocery list!  All the extra stuff is GONE!

And, since the world is on spring break this week (we are not, but all of their friends are) everything is screwy anyways.  So, since my kiddos are with a friend at the local Animal Shelter doing time (hehe...they are volunteering) I decided to go ahead and knock out grocery shopping today - alone - minus 3-5 kiddos that I will have on Wednesday this week!

So, I pulled up all the lists, checked off my items and hit print.  The only work I actually had to do was compare what was on sale at more than one place and figure out which I was going to use.  I didn't keep up with that while I was checking, I just checked any/everything that we use.  If it is a good enough deal, then it is a stock-up item!!  I compared deals and checked my coupons~ here is the deal breaker for me: Kroger doubles up to .65cents. So, once I had all my lists made out, I headed out to shop!

Here are some of my deals that I got this week!

First, I went to Kroger.  The total on my Kroger was $83.08 ~ I paid $53.63! I had a coupon for $5 off of $50 or more.  Kroger is having March Madness sale and there is a list of products that if you purchase 8, then you get $4 off (I purchased 8). I believe those two amounts went onto my Kroger card savings which totaled $23.35, plus I had another $6.10 in coupons.  The two best deals from Kroger were El Paso dinner kits - for some reason, they were on a clearance shelf marked down from $3.19 to $1.59.  They have plenty more shelf life, so I grabbed them, throw in a $1 off two coupon I got them for a little over $1 each! The other deal was Barilla Picolini was on sale for $1.79 (plus, they were part of the March Madness sale) and I had a 55cent off coupon...box of pasta for .69 cents ~ I can handle that!

I also went to the bread discount store (never been in there before) and got some good deals.  Loaf of Sunbeam Giant for $1 - normally $2.45; 20 soft shells for $1.50 - normally $3.09 and hot dog buns for .88cents - normally $1.39.  I also got some honeybuns that were sale by yesterday for .20cents each.

Over all, my shopping was successful today!  I had right at $100. in my pocket and I still have about $25 of that.

Total bill from all three stops:  $117.71
Total cash out of pocket:          $75.52

Total Savings for this week:    $42.19

I will be spending much time with Coupon Mom!!

And just for the record...This post is not one that I am getting paid for or compensated for in anyway.  I am sharing because I know how much grocery bills kill us, so anytime I can cut mine I will - if I can help someone else cut theirs as well, then so be it!!

Free State Maps

I recently found BlogEnergizer.com that is basically a BOOST for blogging!  I am still fairly new to it, and not 100% sure exactly *how* it works- I'll get back to ya on that one!  I did find this link on there that I thought was pretty neat.

Free State Maps

My first thought was "Oh, that would be a nice resource for making travel plans"... then my homeschool mom side kicked it...  This is an awesome site for a state study!!  How fun could a state study be with free maps?  I wonder if you could cut them all out and make it like a puzzle?  Probably wouldn't work would it?  What about making a Lapbook/Notebook using pieces of the maps?  The possibilities are endless!!  I lack in my creativity and I even came up with a few ideas!!

Please share some more ideas that we could use the state maps for!!

On another note, the site that has the list of the state maps is called Hey, It's Free.  I will be bookmarking that one and checking it out later as well!!

CREW: Pandia Press~ R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey ~ Earth and Space

This year for Science, we have been studying birds and bugs and other things that fly.  We have enjoyed this study -even though we didn't do as much as we should have, mostly reading-but the kiddos have learned from it.  We have talked about what to do for next year and I think we have all agreed on earth, space and astronomy.  Until this point, I wasn't sure what curriculum we would use...then we happened upon a chance to review R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey Earth and Space by Pandia Press.

I am thinking this is the way we will go next year!  We have flipped through it and picked a few experiments and projects to do.  The kiddos did have fun with these, so I think they will enjoy the total immersion in it next year.  The projects are fairly easy and most require items that we all have around the house. If you are interested in checking it out, go HERE and check out their *try it before you buy it* page.

CREW: Homeschool in the Woods

We have always been really big on mapwork around here.  Now, since this is a review for the Crew and a certain product, then I probably shouldn't mention the actual History we use. But, if you have been following me for anytime at all, you should know that one!!  Anyways, it is big on mapwork, so therefore, maps are part of our day...everyday.  This kiddos also enjoy having a map of any trips we take.  Imagine our excitement when we got word about this:

We received two different sets, the World Maps and the United States Maps.
The World Maps have Ancient and Modern in them (which have been nice to have with our current history study!) along with notebooking pages.

The United States Maps include the notebooking pages also, as well as maps going back to the beginning of the US as we know it AND individual state maps!!  We haven't used the US Maps much, yet!  We will though, as I am thinking that we will start an in depth US study when we start 5th grade!

AND NOW...THE FIRST CHAPTER:
Prologue
Fourth Day of the Month of Av
Year 3414 after Creation
If you have opened this, you are the chosen one.
For this book has been sealed in the tomb of the ancients of Persia, never to be opened, I pray, until G-d1 has put His finger on a new woman of destiny, a woman who will rise up and change her nation. But we will not talk of your circumstances, and the many reasons this book may have fallen into your hands. There are no mistakes with prayer. You have indeed been called. If this sounds too strange, if you must look around your room and question whether G-d’s finger has perhaps slipped, if you are not a woman with the means to change a nation, then join me on a journey. You must return with me now to a place without hope, a nation that had lost sight of G-d, a girl with nothing to offer, and no one to give it to.

I must introduce myself first as I truly am: an exiled Jew, and an orphan. My given name was Hadassah, but the oppression of exile has stripped that too from me: I am now called Esther,2 so that I may blend in with my captors. My people, the Hebrew nation, had been sent out of our homeland after a bitter defeat in battle. We were allowed to settle in the kingdom of Persia, but we were not allowed to truly prosper there. We blended in, our lives preserved, but our heritage and customs were forced underground. Our hearts, once set only on returning to Jerusalem, were set out to wither in the heat of the Arabian sun. My cousin Mordecai rescued me when I was orphaned and we lived in the capital city of Susa, under the reign of King Xerxes.3 Mordecai had a small flock of sheep that I helped tend, and we sold their fleece in the market. If times were good, we would sell a lamb for someone’s celebration. It was always for others to celebrate. We merely survived. But Mordecai was kind and good, and I was not forced into dishonor like the other orphans I had once known. This is how my story begins, and I give you these details not for sympathy, but so you will know that I am a girl well acquainted with bitter reality. I am not given to the freedom in flights of fantasy. But how can I explain to you the setting of my story? It is most certainly far removed from your experience. For I suspect that in the future, women will know freedom. And freedom is not an easy thing to forget, even if only to entertain an orphan’s story.

But you must forget now. I was born into a world, and into this story, where even the bravest women were faceless specters. Once married, they could venture out of their homes only with veils and escorts. No one yet had freed our souls. Passion and pleasure, like freedom, were the domain of men, and even young girls knew the wishes of their hearts would always be subject to a man’s desire for wealth. A man named Pericles summed up my time so well in his famed oration: “The greatest glory of a woman is to be least talked about by men, whether they are praising you or criticizing you.” Our role was clear: We were to be objects of passion, to receive a man’s attention mutely, and to respond only with children for the estate. Even the most powerful woman of our time, the beautiful Queen Vashti, was powerless. That was my future as a girl and I dared not lift my eyes above its horizon. That is how I enter this story. But give me your hand and let us walk back now, past the crumbling walls of history, to this world forgotten but a time yet remembered. Let me tell you the story of a girl unspared, plunged into heartache and chaos, who would save a nation. My name is Esther, and I will be queen.

1 Out of respect for God, Jews write the name of God without the vowels, believing that the name of God is too holy to be written out completely by a human. God is referred to as either “G-d” or “YHVH.”

2 The name Esther is related to the Persian name of Ishtar, a pagan goddess of the stars.

3 Esther refers to the king by his Persian name. In the Hebrew texts of antiquity, he is also referred to as Ahasuerus.

Eleventh Day of Shevat
Third Year of the Reign of Xerxes
Year 3394 after Creation

Was it today that I became fully awake, or have I only now begun to dream? Today Cyrus saw me in the marketplace haggling gently with my favorite shopkeeper, Shethana, over the price of a fleece. Shethana makes the loveliest rugs—I think they are even more lovely than the ones imported from the East—and her husband is known for his skill in crafting metals of all kinds. When I turned fifteen last year, he fashioned for me a necklace with several links in the center, painted various shades of blue. He says it is an art practiced in Egypt, this inlaying of colors into metal shapes. I feel so exotic with it on and wear it almost daily. I know it is as close to adventure as Mordecai will ever allow.

But as Shethana and I haggled over the fleece, both of us smiling because she knew I would as soon give it to her, Cyrus walked by eating a flatbread he had purchased from another vendor. He grimaced when he took a bite—I think he might have gotten a very strong taste of shallot—and I laughed. He laughed back, wiping his eyes with his jacket and fanning his mouth, and then, oh then, his gaze held my eyes for a moment. Everything in my body seemed to come alive suddenly and I felt afraid, for my legs couldn’t stand as straight and steady and I couldn’t get my mouth to work. Shethana noticed right away and didn’t conceal her grin as she glanced between Cyrus and me. I should have doubled the price of her fleece right then!
Cyrus turned to walk away, and I tried to focus again on my transaction. I could not meet Shethana’s eyes now—I didn’t want to be questioned about men and marriage, for everyone knows I have no dowry. To dream of winning Cyrus would be as foolish as to run my own heart straight through. I cannot dream, for it will surely crush me. And yet I can’t stop this warm flood that sweeps over me when he is near.
I haven’t told you the best part—when Shethana bought her fleece and left, I allowed myself to close my eyes for a moment in the heat of the day, and when I opened them again, there was a little stack of flatbread in my booth. I looked in every direction but could see no one. Taking a bite, I had to spit it out and started laughing. Cyrus was right—the vendor used many bitter shallots. The flatbread was a disaster.

Long division will be the death...

of someone around here...preferably me!!  We spent 4 hours on 3 pages of math today...it's not that they can't do it...it's just not as easy as they would prefer, so they would rather fall completely apart than just focus and do it.

I am not even sure we could call what they were working on *long* division...I know I have seen longer numbers - both inside and outside the bracket thingy!  UGH!!!!!  I am almost thinking we need to back up and start over at multiplication so they can see the steps again...

We currently use Math U See and overall, I really like it, but is there something else that you would recommend that doesn't provoke tears at least once a week from one of us...please share what you use or your favorite math!

On a happier note, the Girl Scout troop visited the Fire Station tonight!  They asked tons of questions and really enjoyed the visit. One more step toward the Bronze marked off the list!! Scrambled eggs and toast from homemade bread for dinner and then it is bedtime!

WHAT I HAVE TO SAY: I haven't finished the book yet, I am about halfway through it. I am really enjoying it though.

Early start =

a LONG day!!  One of Amy's precious children was bright eyed and bushy tailed sometime before 6am...playing with a flashlight!  My first thought was why are the police outside, then I realized what it was...I tried to go back to sleep, but it wasn't happening!

Homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast, then we said goodbye to our friends, praying for a safe 11 hour drive! (They did make it home with no issues).

We learned that when you start school work at 8 am, and you work hard, then you are finished by 11am!!  They spent the rest of the day outside...it was beautiful out.

Roger worked late, so Samantha and I went with Riley to Boy Scouts. I am completely exhausted and headed to bed!

SleepOVER!!

The kiddos didn't sleep in as late as I was hoping they were going to, so we were able to get a jump start on the school work and get done with it fairly early.  Once we were finished with our school work, some of our friends that were in town from Georgia came over for the afternoon.  Kiddos played outside while Amy and I hung out and chatted.  It was nice, just to chat and catch up.

She left to go have dinner with her mom and family and the kiddos and I went to Riley's ball practice.  Once it was over, Amy and the kiddos came back over.  The kiddos all piled in the den floor in their sleeping bags while I got the couch and Amy got comfy in my big blue chair and we turned on G-Force.  Pretty dumb movie by the way...I fell asleep during the end of it.  The kiddos put in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and I didn't see any of it.  I got up at 1am and turned off the TV.

What fun memories!!

Party Day!!

Today was the birthday party...here...at my house...remember, there are two of them, so twice as many friends...and they almost all showed up...

Seriously, we had a great time!!! There were about 12 girls and 5 boys, not counting my two!  They played outside and had a great time!! Kiddos got some nice things for their birthday and they really enjoyed all their friends over.

We did go to church this morning before the party.  Once home, the kiddos were wondering why the party had to be at 2, instead of 1.  They were pretty impatient, but very willing to help get things picked up and ready for the party.

After the party died down, my parents, Rog's parents and my sis all stayed for dinner.  We made two big pans of mexican chicken...and there was very little left!  We didn't play games tonight, everyone was so tired!

CREW: Artisit Pursuits

We have never been that into any art curriculum... I mean, the kiddos like to draw, paint and use all different mediums when they are doing so, but we have never had formal art.

Through the Crew, we were given the opportunity to review a program for Artistic Pursuits.  We chose to start with The Element of Art and Composition for grades 4-6.  When it came in the mail, the kiddos were super excited about it!  Since it is written for the kiddos and they can pretty much do it on their own, they were ready to get started on it.

The kiddos have really enjoyed using this book and we have art work stuck EVERYWHERE!   We have not completed the program, because they are only using this twice a week.  It has been a great addition to our day! I am thinking if they finish up this book, we will be going back for the next book for next year.

I would also like to add that I had quite a bit of email conversation before we got the actual product and I was very impressed with customer service at Artistic Pursuits.

Busy Saturday

Samantha had PowderPuff Derby this morning!  She and 6 of my other girls raced against our service unit.  Samantha's car did great in all the heats, but the track is electronic and other cars were a bit faster.  She placed 7th out of about 35 girls!

I would post some pictures, but seeing as how I LOST the camera cord, with the card adapter in it, while cleaning last week, you will just have to wait. (How's that for a run-on sentence?)

After the race, Riley had ball practice.  It was really cold out and they moved practice to the Blue Building (inside batting cage thingy).  We stayed and watched for a bit, but Gramma, Samantha, Chunky and I were all hungry, so we left to grab a bite to eat.

This afternoon was great for napping...I'm just saying!

Samantha and Roger had the Father/Daughter Dance to attend.  The theme was Luau so they dressed all flowery!  Riley and I have date nights when they go to the F/D Dance.  He always wants to go to TCBY.  There is one fairly close, so we went and had ice cream.  We went on a double date - with Gramma and Chunky!

The dancers are coming in, so I shall go!

CREW: Homschool Library Builder

Now, I know that being a homeschool mom automatically makes you a BOOK FREAK!  If you are like me, you have to have books...I try hard to catch good deals, but sometimes it is hard.  Garage sales work, but they are a crap shoot at finding good books and even slimmer chances that they are in good condition.

As part of the Crew, we were invited to review Homeschool Library Builder!  I think this may be a homeschool mom's heaven!  I haven't purchased anything as of yet, because I am just now starting to make my list for next year and not sure *what* exactly I want from there!  I know when I start making my purchases for next year, this will be the first place I start with my shopping list!

And...we're done!

Notice I didn't say the house was clean...just that we were done!  The house is actually clean.  I still have a few things I need to do, and then the upkeep.

Kiddos went with Aunt Chelle and Em to Playtime Pizza today, then to see Alice in Wonderland.  I took Hershey to the vet and ran the Cookie Money for Girl Scouts to the bank and grabbed stuff for birthday cakes!  Once I got home, I took a nap.  Wasn't feeling that great.  Once the kiddos got home, they helped me finish up around here!

We have a busy weekend ahead of us, so that's it for now!

Almost through the week of spring clean...

...and I feel like we are making progress!

Tuesday while the kiddos were outside playing I worked on the school room/office for a while.  It is a constant source of pain when I am cleaning!!

Wednesday I wasn't feeling great, so I stayed in bed for this morning and let the kiddos have a free morning...I mean, afterall, it is their spring break!!  We didn't do any extra errands while we were out, we just went to music lessons and came back home.  I rested on the couch watching them play Blazing Angels -WWI game on the Wii until church time.  I dropped them at church and Roger and I went to eat dinner - back to the BBQ place! Yum!!  Haven't been there in a while!!  They had the news on and there were storms and tornados in the area so when I headed to church, he headed to the fire station.  I asked him to call and leave messages/ text me on the weather.  When I got out of church, he had left a message that said stay there - it is the safest place in the community!! Once he gave me the ok to go, we went to the station to hang out with them.  Thankfully, the warning that was over us during church was the last one for the night!

Today, Riley asked if he could work on the bathroom by himself!  So, I let him have at it!!  While he was doing that, Samantha worked in the dining room and I worked some more on the office.  Once we finished the bathroom and the dining room, the kiddos went out to play!  We are down to the kitchen (which I was planning on Friday after I make cupcakes for the birthday party) and some picking up in the schoolroom!

Girl Scouts meeting tonight, we started on our Friendship Flags!  They all worked hard and hopefully we will finish them this next meeting or so!!  They are going to be so cute when we are done with them!  I will post a picture of the one that Samantha ends up with and share how we did it!  Roger was at a Fire Department board meeting, so it was late when he got home and we didn't get to watch Survivor! He will be at the station on Friday, so not sure when we will watch it!
